Lake Candia: a nature park and wetland

Lake Candia is a separate lake from Lake Viverone, with the status of a nature park and a Natura 2000 site. It is known as an important wetland in Piedmont, home to water birds and plants that grow in or near the water. People come for a quiet shore, not for a resort.

Two things shape a visit. The shore facilities have no lifeguard, and paddling or rowing by visitors needs advance written notice. If you only want a lake day with services, the Lake Viverone beaches are simpler. If you want a guided day in the region instead, see our Piedmont day trips and wine tours.

Swimming at Lake Candia

Know what the water class does and does not tell you.

Water quality

The two monitored bathing zones, the rowing club zone (Chalet) and the Lido zone, were both rated Buona for 2022 to 2025. That is one step below the Eccellente rating of the four zones at Lake Viverone, so do not carry the Viverone result over to Candia.

No lifeguard

In June 2026 the water was declared suitable for swimming, with a warning that the facilities by the lake have no lifeguard service. Swim at your own risk, keep children within reach and do not swim alone.

Not every shore is a beach

A good water rating is not permission to swim from any bank. Look for the monitored zones and follow local signs. Outside the summer season, do not assume the water is cleared for swimming on a given day.

Canoe, kayak and rowing: the rules

Since an ordinance of 25 February 2025, rowing and canoeing or kayaking are regulated at the lake, including for individual paddlers. A visitor from outside the area must send written notice to the municipality and to the local sports clubs at least 72 hours before the outing. If the notice is late or missing, access and use are not allowed.

That makes a spontaneous paddle with your own boat unrealistic. Plan it a few days ahead, and do not count on a rental you cannot confirm.

On the water, respect the training area and never block the entry or exit of rowing boats. The concrete jetty in front of the equipped area may be used for this sport only with explicit permission.

Watching birds and protecting the wetland

The reason the lake is protected.

The lake is a rich habitat for water birds and for plants that depend on water. Stay on paths, keep dogs under control and keep your distance from nesting and resting birds. Sightings cannot be promised, and no fixed distance applies to every species. Bring binoculars and be patient.

If you want a lake with a raised bird-watching tower, look at Azeglio on Lake Viverone, described on the lake villages page.

Lake Candia: frequently asked questions

Can I swim in Lake Candia?

The water was declared suitable for swimming in June 2026, but the shore facilities have no lifeguard. Swim at your own risk and stay in the monitored zones.

Do I need to register to canoe or kayak?

Visitors from outside the area must give written notice to the municipality and the local sports clubs at least 72 hours ahead. Without it, access and use are not allowed.

Is Lake Candia the same as Lake Viverone?

No. They are two separate lakes with different rules. Viverone has lidos and a boat service. Candia is a nature park and wetland.

Is the water at Candia as good as at Viverone?

Both monitored Candia zones were rated Buona for 2022 to 2025. The four Viverone zones were rated Eccellente. Both ratings are good, but they are different.

Can I use the concrete jetty?

For canoeing or rowing, the jetty in front of the equipped area needs explicit permission.

Is this the official site of Lake Candia?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the municipality or the park. Check current rules with the municipality before you go.
