Candelo, Italy: the medieval Ricetto

The Ricetto of Candelo is a communal fortified storehouse from the 13th and 14th centuries. The villagers built it to protect wine and grain, and today its cobbled lanes, brick and stone houses and gateways make it a medieval village you can walk through. It is a good stop on a day trip from Lake Viverone.

Entry is free, and the outer area is open 24 hours. That is not the same as every room being open all day. Individual rooms, museum spaces and events follow their own hours, so treat the lanes as the free part of the visit. If you want a guide or a wine tasting around the same trip, see the overview of Piedmont wine tours.

What to see in Candelo

The Ricetto is a place to walk rather than a list of ticketed sights.

The lanes and gateways

Narrow cobbled streets run between brick and stone houses, with arched gateways along the way. Wooden balconies and walls make good photo spots.

The wine and grain story

Wine and grain were the reason the Ricetto was built. The wine museum in its cellar rooms picks up that story.

Ecomuseo della Vitivinicoltura

A museum of wine culture set in some of the cellar rooms. Entry is free, but opening days vary, so ask on the spot or check before you plan a visit around it.

Wine around Candelo

Candelo sits in wine country. Erbaluce di Caluso, the DOCG white wine of the area, is produced in the provinces of Torino, Biella and Vercelli, and the Canavese has its own DOC. Many producers receive visitors for tastings by arrangement. A tasting pairs well with a walk through the Ricetto and its wine museum. For ideas and prices, see the Piedmont wine tours and day trips page.

Events and dates in Candelo

Free entry to the Ricetto does not mean free entry to every event. Special days follow their own rules and may sell tickets.

Borgo di Babbo Natale 2026. The Christmas event runs on 21 and 22 November, 28 and 29 November, 5 to 8 December and 12 and 13 December 2026. Meeting Father Christmas and children's workshops take place from 10 to 18. An Open/Fast card with priority queueing is offered, so do not assume the event is free of charge.

Candelo in Fiore. The next edition of the flower event is in 2027. There is no edition in 2026, so do not plan a flower visit this year.
